Johnsons Temperature Controlled Storage Units – Use a Humidity Controlled Storage Cabinet to Protect Your Items

Have you ever noticed your belongings or possessions decreasing in quality over time, despite not being used that regularly? This is often due to the constantly changing environmental factors around them, such as temperature and humidity. When needing a short or long term storage solution for your belongings, consider using temperature controlled storage units as the most reliable way to keep them safe. Those items that are sensitive to environmental factors may need to be stored in the safety of a humidity controlled storage cabinet, for example.

Climate controlled facilities can provide the perfect solution for both personal possessions and commercial items that not only need a secure facility to be held at but also need to be held in specific conditions. This will reduce the damage that could be caused by changes in the environment.

To create a bespoke storage environment at an offsite facility, look no further than Johnsons’ specially designed storage warehouses, located across the UK. Our professional, cost effective services will ensure your items can be kept in the environment needed to protect them from any costly damage. You’ll never again have to worry about the weather, temperature or dust affecting the value or usability of your precious items.

Using Offsite Storage Facilities

Who Uses Offsite Storage Facilities?

People choose to use offsite storage facilities for a variety of reasons, personal and commercial. It may be that you want to create space in your home or want to keep items you’re not using in a safe, secure place. Sometimes people use offsite storage whilst moving house if there’s a delay between leaving their old premises and moving into their new home. Businesses often use offsite storage facilities as a cost effective way to maximise their office space by storing items such as equipment or documents that they don’t need on a daily basis. Secure offsite facilities provide individuals and businesses with the storage solutions they need.

Missing the Damage:

When things are kept in close proximity to you, you can help control the environment around them, such as keeping a room warm or storing things in a cool basement, for example. However, it’s also easy to miss issues when they have a slow build up over time and you only notice when it’s too late, such as item becoming brittle, or damaged by mould. When you entrust your belongings to an offsite storage company, you want to know your items are not only securely protected but are being kept in the right environment to prevent any damage and deterioration occurring over time.

Offsite Environmental Storage:

Often, the type of items left in the hands of secure self store companies are exactly those which could have a sensitive nature depending on the environment they’re in. If this is the case, it’s important to use a company that can offer temperature controlled storage units and can control environmental factors such as dust and dirt from getting near your effects. You want to know your items are in the best possible environment and that you can choose to create a bespoke environment if required.

When an individual or business look for the right storage facility, they often place factors such as size, cost and security high on the list. However, if you have items that could be sensitive to the environment, keeping your belongings in a temperature controlled environment should be something you consider as a priority.

Importance of Temperature Controlled Storage

When looking at what you would like to put into storage, certain items are more sensitive to constant environmental changes than others. Environmental factors that can affect or damage sensitive items include:

  • Heat
  • Cold
  • Humidity
  • Radiation damage from light, especially UV light
  • Mould and damp
  • Pollution such as dust and dirt

Throughout the year these environmental factors can constantly change. This means that any items kept in an unmanaged environment, whether sensitive or not, can be subject to:

  • A build up of dust and dirt on and around the item
  • Temperature related electronic malfunctions
  • Damage from a poorly maintained environment
  • Damp and mould damage due to cold temperatures and humidity
  • Increased decay and deterioration
  • Decolouring
  • Rust
  • Frost damage
  • Liquids freezing

Poorly maintained and unstable conditions can cause your precious possessions to therefore lose value, become damaged or be beyond use.

Using a facility that offers to store your items in an environment such as a humidity controlled storage cabinet, will ensure your effects are kept in the same conditions all year round. They can keep temperatures at stable levels which means you won’t get the humidity or damage caused by constant changes in temperature.

Protecting Your Assets

Climate control is particularly important for protecting certain types of item. We’ve put together a list of some of the most popular items to be put into temperature controlled storage units.

  • Document Storage: Offsite storage is often used for things like keeping legal files in a secure space without using up office space and for archiving purposes. Damp or hot conditions can cause damage to paper materials and even cause them to perish in certain conditions. Damage caused could include yellowing of the paper, ink fading and glue in bindings deteriorating. This means that if you’re storing anything paper based such as files, books or photos, you should think about temperature controlled storage units as an option. Consider this when looking at your record management plans.
  • Furniture: If looking at any long term storage of furniture, it’s important to think about the ideal temperature to store them in. Things like mattresses, chairs and sofas could build up mould in damp conditions and metals and plastics could become brittle in extreme temperatures. Any wooden items could be subject to splitting, warping or swelling.
  • Art: Fine art painting, art supplies and art pieces may be particularly valuable and it’s therefore important to ensure they do not use value whilst not in use. Poor environmental conditions can lead to materials expanding and contracting which could, for example, leave a painting to form cracks and paint to flake off. Colours can also fade under the wrong conditions.
  • Antiques: Antiques and family heirlooms are often things people put in storage as they may not be using them at the time but need a safe and secure place to keep them. The condition of antiques is often far from perfect and have been subjected to wear and tear and environmental damage over the years. With such fragile items, it’s important to place them in an environment which will slow down the deterioration process.
  • Instruments: Musical instruments can be surprisingly delicate when it comes to environmental conditions. Extreme temperatures can affect the quality of keys, strings and materials, damaging musical instruments and leading to costly repairs.
  • Clothes: When considering the long term storage of any clothing pieces, it’s important that mould and damp do not affect the materials, which can happen if not in climate-controlled storage, which will keep air conditions dry.
  • Electronics: Technology such as cameras, computers, household appliances and other electronic equipment are particularly sensitive to extreme changes in temperature. In LCD displays, for example, there is electrically charged liquid that can be altered due to high or low temperatures and the wiring of these items can also be affected. A climate-controlled environment protects parts from cracking and rust forming that could cause electronic items to stop working permanently.
  • Chemicals: It’s particularly important to keep hazardous materials and chemicals in specific temperatures to ensure they’re kept in a controlled environment that keeps them from becoming dangerous or damaged by the environment they’re in. Low temperatures, for example, could cause chemicals to freeze and combust.
  • Wine: Wine collections need to be stored at particular temperatures for their long term preservation. Unless you have a specially designed wine cellar, temperature controlled storage is the perfect way to keep your wine collection safe from premature ageing, which would cause the wine to oxidise and become metallic in taste. Ideally, wine should be stored at a consistently cool temperature.

OUR STORAGE OPTIONS

At our Johnsons offsite storage facilities, we offer a wide variety of storage options for any type, size and shape of items. All storage options are safe, effective and hold the capacity stated. Our options include storage containers that are 7’ long x 5’ wide x 7.5’ high, crates and lockable cabinets for smaller items, and pallet racking designed to meet bespoke criteria. Our flexible range of options means there’s appropriate storage, whatever your requirements.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

When protecting sensitive items, we can offer humidity controlled storage options to meet your requirements. This involves segregated temperature controlled storage units that will keep your items within a set temperature range. We always assess the condition of items before storage and agree this with you. As standard, all our facilities also have other factors to ensure environmental factors are strictly controlled.

  • Storage areas have close fitting access doors.
  • We protect all areas from dust and dirt.
  • There are no windows in the storage areas to reduce solar gain and even our office areas at the facilities have black out blinds.
  • Items are never placed on the ground and there is sufficient space underneath storage cabinets to protect items from damage and make inspections easier. It also ensures cleaning is more thorough to remove any dust from the area.
  • There is adequate ventilation in each area to prevent pockets or damp or stagnant air forming, especially around shelving.
  • We have plenty of packing options for extra protection and containers can also be padded if appropriate.
  • We inspect all areas to identify any potential access points for things like dust and insects, such as air ducts, pipes, electrical ducts and cracks. Any identified will be immediately sealed.
  • We test all items in storage to ensure there are no vapours emitted which could be harmful to items in close proximity.
  • We have a building management plan in place which includes keeping the environment organised, clean, tidy and maintained. Storage areas are cleaned on a regular basis with a clear cleaning specification in each area.

SECURE FACILITIES

At our secure storage facilities, we’ll ensure your items are safeguarded with security measures.

  • We have 24-hour CCTV inside and outside of our facilities, and footage is externally monitored.
  • Our secure warehouses have a single point of access, intercom system and secure perimeter fencing.
  • Our premises are fully alarmed.
  • Storage areas have strongly constructed doors, keys and access codes are strictly controlled, and access is restricted.
  • All visitors will need to present valid ID and entry is via appointment only. Visitors will be escorted by Johnsons’ staff at all times.
  • All security policies are enforced by Senior Management.

RELIABLY KEEPING YOUR ASSETS SAFE

  • Valuable or vulnerable items are not relocated without consultation with the Trust or other specialists, if applicable.
  • All storage options are robust enough to withstand the capacity stated and support items safely.
  • Store buildings are inspected daily, including legislation-controlled inspection of equipment, and action taken on any issues immediately.
  • We have a pest-control management and monitoring system.
  • We handle any historical or fragile items with specialist equipment or gloves.
  • Full emergency procedures are in place including fire control systems.
  • All staff are trained in full manual handling procedures and packing processes.

Johnson provides the environmental storage solutions you need, whatever your requirements.
